SPOONS AND FORKS, Mold
Stephen John Spooner and Christine Ansloos opened Spoons and Forks cafe in Mold in November, 2019. Then in a short space of time, they had to adapt their new business while dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. And it's proved a hit with customers, old and new...
Christine said: "We are a cafe selling breakfast, lunches and evening meals. When times are normal (pre coronavirus), we're open Friday and Saturday nights for special menus, including tapas, curries, Mexican and steak nights. Now we're open every day, except Tuesdays."
But as life changed across Britain, the couple had to change the way they did things.
Christine explained: "We have never done delivery and only a few take-outs but throughout lockdown, this has been a service we offer. We had never done afternoon tea or Sunday roast and have adapted to this, while keeping with our statement of using recycled and re-usable containers, and using as many local suppliers and locally sourced goods as possible. We also do vegan and gluten-free options for afternoon tea.
"Spoons (Ste the chef) makes all the scones, Victoria sponge cake, chocolate cake, sausages rolls, quiches, as well as the breakfast, lunches, afternoon tea, Sunday roast and dinners. The pictures and reviews back on social media have been amazing.
"And we have regular customers who say the service we provide is a glimmer of hope and warmth when things have been so hard."
It was something people quickly picked up on, and not just locally.
"We had an order placed from people in Canada wanting to wish their parents a happy VE Day, and orders from all over the country for Father's Day and other special occasions, because they were unable to visit in person," said Christine.
"A lady rang asking if we could deliver to Flint, it was for her daughter's 30th birthday. She is isolation and her daughter is a NHS nurse. So we did up a party box with card and balloons and also a bottle of fizz no extra charge. Since then her daughter has ordered every week, either afternoon tea or Sunday roast.
"We always ask if it is a special occasion and if yes, we try and make up a box with colourful paper and balloons and include a card with a message off the sender. We have sent birthday, anniversary, new job, new baby and missing you messages and cards.
"We are a family-run business and happy to take order over the phone and Messenger."
