Year 7 pupils at Old Colwyn secondary school Ysgol Bryn Elian are being advised to return to school after a possible case of Covid-19 proved negative.

A statement published this evening on its website says: "We do not have a confirmed case of Covid in Year 7. I have just been informed that the test result has comeback negative.

'I have also been advised that Year 7 can return to school as from tomorrow morning, as long as they are cough free.

"As a precaution, any Year 7 with a cough should remain at home."

The school had previously, before the results of the test were known, had issued instructions that Year 7 pupils should stay home for the time being as a result of a possible case of Covid -19 in year 7.

Public Health Wales had advised the school send Year 7 home as a precautionary measure.

Despite the news this evening of Year 7 pupils being allowed to return to school, Year 12 and 13 pupils are advised to remain in "full isolation" due to "possible cases in the sixth form".

This evening's statement published on Ysgol Bryn Elian's website says: "Year 12 and 13 should remain in full isolation for 14 days or until they hear otherwise from the school.

"This is because there are still possible cases in the sixth form.

"I stress that these are not confirmed cases. We have no confirmed cases currently at Ysgol Bryn Elian."

Ysgol Bryn Elian is a bilingual co-educational comprehensive school on Windsor Drive.

It has approximately 950 pupils on its roll, 150 of whom are sixth formers.

It has a staff of about 55.

In a message earlier this week to parents and carers, the school had already urged all learners and staff to wear reusable face coverings during entry to the school in the morning, changeover of lessons and returning to lessons after break and lunch.

The message added learners will not need to wear a covering in classrooms.
