WORK to demolish a number of buildings is underway to make way for new facilities.

Demolition work started on Monday at Meadow Lodge in Colwyn Bay.

The derelict buildings on the site will be demolished - with the bricks, concrete and tarmac used in the construction of the new building, and other materials such as timber and slates salvaged and recycled and the site made ready for the proposed Children’s Assessment Centre.

Cllr Cheryl Carlisle, cabinet member for Children and Family Social Care, said: “It’s fantastic to see work underway on this derelict site to turn it into a useful and much needed facility.

“Our plans for a Children’s Assessment Centre will bring professional help and support into one location. Being able to provide assessment and care for Conwy children in our county is fantastic news for our families and young people.”

Work is expected to take about four weeks.

A planning application to construct the new Children’s Assessment Centre on the site has been submitted to the planning authority, and is subject to the usual planning processes. The project is a partnership between Conwy County Borough Council, Denbighshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Demolition work is also being carried out a Bron y Nant and Bryn Euryn Nurseries in Rhos on Sea. This is scheduled to take about six weeks.

Four existing buildings on the site will be demolished - with the bricks, concrete and tarmac used in the construction of the new buildings, and other materials such as timber and slates will be salvaged and recycled.

The construction of the new Disability Respite Facility with Complex Care day centre, alongside plant nurseries, café and shop is scheduled to start early next year, with completion expected in 2023.

Cllr Louise Emery, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services, said: “It’s good to see the demolition underway and I’m looking forward to seeing the construction work start on site.

"The new facility on the top site will offer planned respite to all Disability service users.

"The plant nursery with a new café and shop will be open to the public and will provide enhanced work opportunities for people with disabilities.”
