MONEY was raised during the virtual London Marathon for a foundation launched in the name of a much loved PE teacher.

A total of 12 Porth Eirias runners took on the virtual London Marathon on Sunday, October 4 and raised £500 for a total of four chosen charities: Mind Conwy, The Delyth Wyn Jones Foundation, Conwy Food Bank and The Kind Bay Initiative.

The foundation was set up in memory of Delyth Wyn Jones, assistant headteacher and head of PE at Ysgol Bryn Elian in Old Colwyn, who died unexpectedly on September 24 2019 of a pulmonary embolism.

Bethan Wyn Jones, Delyth's sister who took part in the run, said: "We were supported by our equally fabulous members through the day who either ran or walked parts of the route and offered support and encouragement; they gave out water and goodies and made sure the donation buckets were well used.

"One of the Porth Eirias run leaders Gemma Gale started from her home in Llandudno at 5.30am. I set off from Porth Eirias at 6am to run loops between Porth Eirias and the Rhos Fynach to cover the marathon distance."

Bethan and Gemma both carried out the same route whilst other members ran their own courses, some of which took in the Great Orme.

Bethan added: "Covid restrictions meant some people who had intended to run with us could not join us due to living in Denbighshire, so Anne Claire Jones ran solo to support her charity Giddo’s Gift, whilst Cath Thornton ran the distance on her treadmill at home in Rhyl where she at least kept dry.

"Gemma had to also change her plan from running the course to walking due to having picked up an injury three weeks before race day.

"It was a truly family affair because as well as my running the course, Elen and Mike, my sister and brother in law, provided medical support throughout the day to all running members via their business- Accredilink Community Task Force."

The Delyth Wyn Jones Foundation, which was launched in January, has a two fold purpose - one of which is to raise awareness about Pulmonary embolism, a blocked blood vessel in the lungs.
