A ROAD safety campaign has set up a mobile enforcement site in a bid to reduce crashes on the A55.

The safety campaign's new parking site near the 50mph zone in Colwyn Bay will function as a replacement for two previous sites where officers have overseen traffic on the westbound and eastbound lanes since 2012.

It is hoped that the new site will allows monitoring of both carriageways from a safer, more prominent location.

“We enforce at the right place, at the right time, for the right reason," a police spokesperson said.

"When enforcing at this location, we record an average of 60 speeding offences an hour. Speeding increases the risk of collisions and injuries on our roads and by enforcing at this site we hope to encourage motorists to comply with the legal speed limit and to see a reduction in the volume of offences we record.”

GoSafe has a number of marked vans and motorcycles spread across North Wales which are used at various locations to capture offences of speed and other road traffic violations, including mobile use and not wearing a seatbelt.

Whilst enforcement of this site has resulted in a reduction in collision and casualty rates, high speeds have been recorded on the A55 meaning that enforcement will continue for the foreseeable future.

Prior to establishing the sites back in 2012 there had been 19 collisions with 26 casualties including four children and two pedestrians. Speed surveys had shown that approximately 40 per cent of vehicles were exceeding the speed limit with one per cent of vehicles recording speeds in excess of 65mph.

Due to the speeds recorded, Go Safe said it was fortunate that there had not been more serious injuries resulting from the many collisions.

The road has a 50mph speed limit and is located on the North Wales Expressway, which is a major Trunk road running along the coastline.

Large volumes of traffic use the road for local commuting and travel between the ferry terminal at Holyhead and major cities in England such as Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham.

The vehicles using the road include a large number of HGVs transporting goods between Ireland and mainland UK.

In 2018 there was one collision on the A55 stretch resulting in one seriously injured casualty and one minor casualty, and in 2019 there were two collisions with four minor injuries.
