THE MS for Clwyd West urged residents to "rediscover the true meaning of Christmas" over the festive period.

Darren Millar said that this year has been "the toughest most of us have ever faced" but that it is important to "remember those less fortunate than ourselves" during the Christmas celebrations.

"2020 has been a year like no other and sadly this Christmas is going be greatly different for us all," said Mr Millar.

"The celebrations won’t be anything like what we are used to, but thankfully the majority of people will still be able to gather and spend precious down time with their immediate family.

"Regrettably, this won’t be the case for everyone, so let’s take time over the festive period to remember those less fortunate than ourselves; the vulnerable and at risk people who will be forced to spend Christmas alone, those grieving for loved ones they have lost to Covid and other illnesses and accidents throughout the year, and the key workers who will be apart from their families for the good of others.

"Christmas is typically a special time of year, and it is important that, despite the challenges we are facing, we work hard to keep it special for all our children who have experienced much disruption to their lives this year.

"Whilst 2020 has been the toughest most of us have ever faced, there have been positives amongst all the gloom. What has stood out to me more than anything is the way in which communities have pulled together to help and support each other in these difficult times. Hopefully the lessons we have all learnt from the pandemic this year will make us all more compassionate and caring people going forward.

"We are all keen to see the back of this dreadful virus, and whilst it may sometimes feel like we never will, I urge you all to stay positive. Much progress has been made in tackling this virus, we have found and are administering a vaccine, and better times are on the horizon.

"At this important time of year for the Christian faith, I encourage you all to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas in the birth of Jesus and the hope and peace that only He can give.

"Best wishes to you all. Nadolig llawen a blwyddyn newydd dda."
