FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a blaze involving a large number of tyres at a garage near to a Wrexham school.

Crews were called out shortly before 4pm today after the fire broke out on Llangollen Road in Acrefair.

Black smoke could be seen billowing from the scene and two nearby properties had to be evacuated as a precaution.

The road had to be closed to enable crews to tackle the flames.

Nearby Ysgol Acrefair was able to get children safely home although staff had to remain on site due to the road closure.

The school tweeted: "All safe and well. All children home safely , staff stuck in school due to road closure."

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently in attendance at a fire at a garage in Acrefair involving a number of tyres and causing considerable smoke.

"Two nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution. Please avoid the area and close windows and doors if affected by smoke."
