EMERGENCY services were called to Regent Street in Wrexham on Sunday afternoon to deal with an 'ongoing incident'.

Nearby properties were evacuated and the road was blocked off following reports of a suspected gas leak.

Wayne Griffiths, Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Wrexham said: "We were alerted to reports of a suspected gas leak at a property in the Regent Street area of Wrexham yesterday afternoon (16 May) and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

"On arrival, we found that emergency services were in control of the area and had evacuated nearby businesses.

“As a precaution, we turned off the gas supply to the property, making it safe. Our engineers carried out all necessary checks and found no evidence of leak on the mains gas network. We advised the owner to arrange for a gas-safe registered engineer to come and service their gas appliances and internal gas pipework.

“If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.

"Before visiting, we’ll ask you to let us know if you or anyone in your household is experiencing Coronavirus symptoms or self-isolating. We’ll still come and help you: but our teams will take some additional precautions to keep us all safe.”

Staff at Primark were seen standing outside having been evacuated, alongside Mcdonald's staff and other nearby properties.

A Primark spokesperson said: “We can confirm that employees and customers were evacuated from our Wrexham store on Saturday for a short period, due to a suspected gas leak in the area.

"The safety and wellbeing of our employees and customers is our top priority and our store was later reopened once it was safe to do so."

A Welsh Ambulance Service Spokesman said: "We were called at 12.28 yesterday (16/5) to McDonalds on Regent Street, Wrexham to reports that there were high levels of CO2 at the location.

"We worked with the Fire Service to cordon and evacuate shops and residences in the area as well as closing the road. Gas services attended and the road was reopened shortly after 2pm."

North Wales Police confirmed they closed the road, which was later re-opened.
