THE visit of singer and actor Michael Ball to Llandudno’s Great Orme mines will be shown on Channel 5 on Friday, July 30.

As part of his new series, ‘Michael Ball’s Wonderful Wales,’ you can watch his trip underground into the site’s visitor route earlier this year, as he learns about what makes it so special, at 8pm on Friday.

It is the fourth episode of his new show, having already explored South, West and Mid Wales, including the area which supplied coal to the Titanic, a trip to Aberystwyth, and an education about Lord Rhys, one of the forefathers of Welsh arts culture.

As well as visiting Llandudno on this week’s show, Michael also makes trips to the Rhug Estate Organic Farm in Denbighshire, which was granted a Royal Warrant in 2018, the Llangollen Aqueduct, and Erddig Hall, where he performs with the Fron Male Voice Choir.

Discovered in 1987 during a scheme to landscape an area of the Great Orme, the copper mines date back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age, and are thought to be the largest prehistoric mines discovered in the world so far.

The self-guided tour of the mines, which takes roughly 45 minutes and covers approximately 200 metres, takes you down two levels which are accessed via a series of slopes and staircases, while the temperature in the mines typically varies between 5°C and 8°C.

COVID-secure tours of the Great Orme mines are also open to the general public, with tickets only able to be purchased on arrival. To find out more, visit their website here.
