THE redevelopment of a hotel in the Conwy Valley area has been given the go-ahead.

Waterloo Hotel, in Betws Y Coed, was granted unanimous approval for refurbishments to go ahead at Wednesday’s Snowdonia National Planning Committee Meeting (September 8).

A post on the hotel’s Facebook page read: “We’re excited to announce that unanimous approval for the redevelopment of Waterloo Hotel was granted at yesterday (Wednesday)’s Snowdonia National Park Planning Committee Meeting.

“The development has been supported by a local team of specialists, who have engaged from an early stage with the authority and the Design Commission for Wales to ensure a proposal of the highest standard, whilst taking into account key factors such as the design and landscape.

“The proposed architectural form reflects the character of the original building, and also the strong character of Betws y Coed.

“Landscaping has also been an integral part of the design process from the very beginning, informed by detailed analysis of the local landscaping context.

“Massive congratulations and thank you to all involved!”

Minutes from Wednesday's meeting confirmed that the redevelopment will include partial demolition, alterations and extensions to the existing hotel.

There will also be an erection of a mixed use development building comprising of retail and café space, serviced apartments, and a multi-function and conference suite.

Existing chalet buildings will be demolished, while new accesses, alterations and closures to existing access points will be created.

The hotel will also soon have its own gateway feature, and overflow car park.

There will also be a change of use of land to be used for recreational purposes, and a creation of a viewing platform together with associated landscaping, parking and other works (full application), and an erection of spa pool building (outline application).
