RESIDENTS have a final chance to make their views heard over Conwy’s campaign to become the next UK City of Culture.

Conwy County Borough Council is asking residents for their views on what should be included in a programme of events that will form part of its bid for the prestigious cultural status in 2025.

The consultation closes today.

If Conwy makes the competition longlist, to be confirmed over the coming weeks, there will also be volunteering and training opportunities for residents.

Those of the 20 bidders that make the longlist will receive £40,000 to stage events and beef up their campaign.

Conwy is presenting itself as “the adventure capital of Wales” where visitors can “embrace your inner child”, with natural landscapes including the Conwy Valley, Great Orme and Snowdonia, and outdoor activities such as ZipWorld and Adventure Parc Snowdonia.

It will also promote its heritage sites including the 13th century Conwy Castle and popular culture such as I’m a Celebrity location Gwrych Castle and Llandudno’s viral Kashmiri goats.

Its “launch pad” towns are Abergele, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Llanrwst and Conwy, with “town teams” set up to lead creative and community activities.

Rhys Thomas, General Manager at Bodnant Garden, Conwy said “We actively support Conwy 2025. We would encourage everyone to explore culture, it can be a fantastic adventure for us all to enjoy.

“Culture can be a great way to get communities to work together, where anyone can get involved, and everyone can make a difference. Community spirit is a real motivator to making special places better for everyone.”

The successful area will take on the baton from Coventry, the 2021 UK City of Culture, which has received more than £15.5 million from the UK Government to directly support its year of programmes.
