A COLWYN Bay school is thought to have raised roughly £7,000 following a week of fundraising activities, culminating in their ‘Make a Difference Day’ on Friday.

Students and staff at Ysgol Bryn Elian raised money throughout last week in a variety of ways, including a sponsored minimum 60,000 steps challenge, a non-uniform day and an enterprise fair.

They then rounded off their charity week with ‘Make a Difference Day’ on Friday, October 1, which included a visit from Clwyd West MS Darren Millar, a fancy dress event, and a careers talk from Formula One constructors, McLaren.

The money raised will go to a number of causes, including continuing the partnership between Ysgol Bryn Elian and Business2Schools (B2S), a national charity specialising in moving unwanted technology and furniture to schools.

The organisation has already helped Ysgol Bryn Elian upgrade 140 PCs, 130 laptops and 150 monitors, as well as their teacher chairs, library and sixth form room.

Paul Woodhouse, head of business and computing at Ysgol Bryn Elian, said: “It was incredible. The students have done us proud.

“We’re just about to count up and we’re probably looking at about £7,000 which we’ve managed to raise, which is an incredible achievement.

“Some is going to (children’s hospice) Tŷ Gobaith , some will go to B2S and the rest will go on making a difference to the school environment; probably an outdoor seating area, but also paying for more lorries for more equipment to be brought to the school from B2S.

“It’s going to have such an impact. I’m so proud of the students, the staff and the local community for getting together and really making a difference.”

Ysgol Bryn Elian also received sports equipment from two parents last week, as well as cash donations from numerous business, while roughly 330 cakes were made for the school to sell during Make a Difference Day.

Meanwhile, year 11 student Owen Warwick also raised more than £600 for the project by collecting donations while sitting in the reception of Abergele Golf Club on Saturday, September 25.
