TOWNS across Conwy will fall silent this week to remember British soldiers who have died while serving their country.

Ceremonies are being held at town memorials on Remembrance Sunday to mark the signing of the Armistice and to show respect to the soldiers who fought and died during the First and Second World Wars, as well as later conflicts.

A commemoration will take place in Colwyn Bay, with a parade from Woodland Road East to St Paul’s Church, and on to the War Memorial at Queen’s Gardens. A service and laying of wreaths will then take place at 10.50am before a minute’s silence at 11am.

In Conwy, a service will be held at the Bodlondeb Cenotaph, followed by a short service at St Mary’s & All Saints Church. A wreath laying service will also be held at the church at 11am on Armistice Day on Thursday, led by deputy mayor Joan Vaughan, to mark Armistice Day.

At Llandudno War Memorial, a Sunday ceremony will be attended by mayor of Llandudno Harry Saville, Llandudno Town Council members and officers, as well as members of Llandudno’s ex-service and voluntary organisations.

Another service takes place at Penrhynside War Memorial, led by Reverend John Stone and attended by Llandudno’s deputy mayor Carol Marubbi. This will also include town council members, ex-service personnel and veterans’ organisations.

In Craig-y-Don, a Remembrance Garden has been created at St Paul’s Church for members of the public to visit. It includes poppy pebbles painted by Bodafon School pupils and poppies made from recycled plastic bottles by church member Phyllis Oliver.

Meanwhile, Conwy County Borough Council is supporting the Royal British Legion’s call for a nationwide observance of a two minutes’ silence at 11am on Thursday, on the ‘11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month’.

Cllr Abdul Khan, chairman of Conwy County Borough Council, said “I hope others in the community, whether they are at work or at home, will join us in observing the two minutes silence.”

Last year many services were cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions, however face masks and social distancing are still required.

Residents may also need to reserve a place at a service and should check with their town council.
