IT IS A GIFT just in time for Christmas - a Wales Under-20s Call Up.

Owain Evans, a St David's College in Llandudno pupil, has not only been invited to train with the Wales Under-20s but has been selected for the squad to play in an uncapped game against Scotland Development.

Owain, 18, is training a year ahead of his age group. If he impresses the coaches at the WRU training academy at the Vale of Glamorgan, he could be picked to play for Wales during the forthcoming Six Nations Under-20 Championships.

It would be the first time a St David’s College pupil has ever been called to play for Wales, and it would be a dream come true for Owain as he’s always harboured an ambition to play for his country.

Dan Lycett, director of sport, said: "Owain is walking on water at the moment. He’s a very intelligent player with the way he manipulates the ball.

"Wales became interested in him when RGC played the Osprey’s development squad and he ended up scoring three tries against them."

Owain plays for RGC (Rygbi Gogledd Cymru) the regional team for the North Wales Rugby Development Region, Llangefni Rugby Club, and is Captain for the 1stXV.

He joined St David's College after gaining a raft of A* and A grades in his GCSE’s. He is studying maths, PE, physics and biology A ‘levels and is hoping to further his studies at University.

Mr Lycett added: "He’s fantastic off the pitch excelling academically. The world is very much his oyster.”

Being six-foot four in height ensures Owain has a commanding presence on the rugby field.

“It’s not often people get an opportunity like this,” said Owain.

The teenager admits he had a pinch me moment when he walked into the training grounds in the Vale of Glamorgan.

“I’ve always wanted to play for Wales, and this is the next step forward.

“The support I’ve had from Mr Lycett, Ross and the rest PE department has been incredible, and they’ve really helped develop my game and are always there if I’ve got any questions.

“Mr Lycett is always proactive in furthering my knowledge and understanding of the game, and Ross developed a bespoke training programme for me which was a game changer really during lockdown.

“I don’t think I would have got this far without them.”
