A FUNDRAISER combined with a football match has collected over £7,000 for the family of a man killed in a crash in North Wales.

Two people were confirmed to have died after the crash near Dobshill just before 12.30pm on Saturday, February 26.

One of them was a driver who had been travelling the wrong way up the A55. The other was 50-year-old Sean Brett from Anglesey.

Mr Brett was a much-loved figure on the island and beyond, particularly within the footballing community.

As a player, he was a right back who turned out for the likes of Llandegfan (Anglesey League), the Castle and the Vic. He spent 14 years as a player manager in the Sunday League days also.

As a coach, despite having also been with the likes of Glantraeth and Gaerwen, he was best known for his time with Menai Tigers.

He spent 12 years there as a coach with the junior teams, where he helped break many players through into the men's game - including former Caernarfon Town and current Colwyn Bay FC star Sam Jones.

During Brett’s time with the club, they enjoyed many a great success including winning the Anglesey League, the Megan Cup twice, the Elias Cup, the IPP Cup and the Meditel Cup (x2), the league title and the Bob Owen memorial shield in the Gwynedd League.

The finest moment of course, although bittersweet, was when the Tigers won the Gwynedd League (above) and Meditel Cup double in 2018/19 – but were subsequently denied promotion to the Welsh Alliance on ground criteria.

Following his death, a fundraising page was set up by the club to help support the family. That has, by now, collected £3,567 (correct at time of writing).

Last night, a minutes applause was held before the North Wales Coast West Premier clash between Mr Brett's former club the Tigers and Aberffraw.

A crowd of around 450 people were in attendance as the Tigers ran out 4-3 winners thanks to goals from Craig Roberts, Dean Redmond (x2) and Callum Davidson. Berffro's goals were scored by Nathan Moore, Adam Hallybone and Alan Williams.

Redmond in particular had been a big part of the Tigers' success under Brett in 2018/19 as he scored 39 goals during that season.

A £5 entry fee was charged with all proceeds going towards supporting the Brett family. The Tigers have said that this has now taken the grand total raised to over £7,000 with money still coming in.
