CHILDREN at St Joseph's Primary School listened with a rare rapt silence as author Susan Westwood regaled the youngsters with tales of Colin, Bea and Percy, three fairy penguin friends at the centre of her book “Lev and the Fairy Penguins” on her recent visit to the Colwyn Bay school.

Years Two and Three - aged six to eight - were treated to the visit from the Rhos-on-Sea author to mark World Book Day on March 3.

"This has been an amazing experience with very inquisitive children," said Susan, a former lecturer and sign-language tutor.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, say World Book Day organisers; more so than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, World Book Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the globe.
