COLWYN Gateway Club won the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service last year, and was presented with their award on Friday (March 18).

The charity organises days out and short breaks, and provides support to adults with learning and/or physical disabilities.

This is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK, and is in recognition of outstanding voluntary work in the community.

The Rhos-on-Sea charity received the award during a presentation at Colwyn Leisure Centre on Friday.

Chair Paul Wild said: “A big thank you to the staff at the leisure centre and to Porter’s Coffee Shop for providing an excellent buffet.

“(I) would like to thank every volunteer, past and present, for the time they have dedicated to Colwyn Gateway Club along with fundraisers that have the club in their thoughts when fundraising.

“(I) would like to thank the current group of volunteers that have held the club together during these difficult times (Dei Williams, Val Williams, Kerry Bancroft, Tom Bancroft, Geoff Brown ,Pat Brown, Paul Young, Justyna Hughes-Tyszko and Ann Wild).

“Without these people, Colwyn Gateway could easily have folded.

“Finally, (I) would like to give a special mention to founder volunteers Pat Thomas, Bryan Thomas and Barbara Thomas, that helped set up the club nearly 40 years ago.

“Sadly, Pat and Bryan are no longer with us, but this award is dedicated to the memory of you.”
