A FUNDRAISER event is to be held to celebrate a year of an organisation assisting those with learning disabilities and/or autism being involved in North Wales.

Gig Buddies Cymru will host “The Big Social” at Academi, Bangor, on Thursday, March 31, starting at 7pm.

The project matches a person with a learning disability and/or autism with a volunteer who shares the same interests as them, and is based in Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd and Wrexham.

People are matched on aspects like their music tastes and hobbies to tackle isolation and loneliness barriers.

More than 50 people in North Wales have so far got involved, with the March 31 event including DJ sets and more live entertainment.

Rachel Somerville, project coordinator, said: “We are very proud, and this is a celebration to say thank you to the people currently involved, to raise awareness and campaign for people who are not aware or involved, and just a chance to have a big inclusive party.

“Our socials are not usually open to the public, but as we are fundraising in this one, so we opened it up to the public.

“People get to genuinely go and do the things they really want to do.

“It’s so far been great for people’s wellbeing too, not just our participants but also for the volunteers involved, especially after the past couple of years.”
