CLWYD West MS Darren Millar has commended a Colwyn Bay dental practice which was taken over last year after Bupa Dental Care announced plans to close it.

It was feared that 12,000 people would be without a dentist when the Bupa Dental Care first announced its plans to close the Colwyn Bay practice, as other NHS dentists in the area were full to capacity and unable to take them on.

Mr Millar launched a campaign in a bid to safeguard services in the town and worked closely with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Bupa to secure a solution to the problem.

He was delighted when it was announced that Eirlys Dental, a group of family friendly dental practices based in North Wales and run by Dr Mostafa Hassaan, would be taking on the practice.

Last week, he paid a visit to Dr Hassaan and his team to see the changes made to the premises since the takeover.

Speaking after the visit, he said: “It was a real worry when Bupa Dental Care announced last year that they would be closing the practice and I know patients were deeply concerned, particularly given the shortage of dentists in North Wales.

“I was, therefore, thrilled when Dr Hassaan announced he would be taking over the surgery, saving it from closure, and was delighted to pay him a visit this week to see the changes made to the premises since he stepped in last year.

“I toured the facility, met dentists and staff, and discussed changes to the Welsh Dental Contract.

“Dr Hassaan and his team have done a fantastic job at the practice and are providing an excellent service to their patients. I thank and commend them all.”
