A GROUP of Coleg Llandrillo’s games development and esports students completed a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise money for those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Currently, the students have raised more than £1,600 and counting.

The five students – organiser Karlton Davies and Leon Beckett from Rhos-on-Sea, Noah Twomey (Llandudno), Thomas Drawbridge-Davies (Deganwy) and Liam Reid (Towyn) – along with tutor Rob Griffiths, played a range of games from 6pm on Thursday (March 31) until 6pm the following day.

This was watchable via a live stream on Twitch, to raise money for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal - run by The British Red Cross Society.

Games played included Mario Kart, 5 Nights of Freddy, Smash Bros and Pokemon.

During the event, all named donations were entered into a raffle, with the chance of winning a new Xbox Series S, a Hyper X gaming headset, and a £50 Xbox gift card.

The Xbox was originally won online by someone from Canada; she donated it back to the cause and also refused a cash alternative.

It was redrawn, and was then won by the college’s programme area manager for computing and media, who also donated back to raise more money for the appeal.

Karlton said: “I originally noticed a charity streaming event in aid of cancer research, and after seeing the atrocities in the Ukraine, I put the two together and came up with the 24-hour live streaming charity event to raise money and awareness.

“Sleeping over at college was hard going, but everyone was really supportive, bouncing off each other to help us stay awake all night.”

Rob Griffiths added: “I am extremely proud of both their initial desire and final achievement.

“It was a difficult challenge, but thoroughly rewarding. After getting home, I slept for 14 hours solid!”
