ABERCONWY MS Janet Finch-Saunders has secured assurances from the Welsh Government that monitoring and enforcement work of razor clams North Wales is ongoing.

Mrs Finch-Saunders had recently written to the Welsh Government to report the alleged harvesting of razor clams along the Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr beaches, in breach of prohibition orders.

Commenting on the news the Aberconwy MS said: “The razor clam beds in Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr were originally closed in 2017 and the current closure is due to continue until the end of this year.

“This action has been taken to safeguard the local razor clam population.

“I am delighted to be informed by the Minister that Welsh Government officials continue to update signage regarding this closure to raise awareness.

“Additionally, Marine Enforcement Officers (MEOs) continue to patrol this section of coastline to ensure compliance and to monitor fishing activities along the North Wales coast.

“However, should any resident have intelligence regarding illegal fishing activity at this location or others, then I would encourage them to report it to: Fisheries-Intel@Gov.Wales.

“We must all play our part to safeguard and preserve our marine environment and marine biodiversity for future generations.”
