A TEENAGER killed in a crash on the A55 drove into the back of a lorry, it was revealed at the opening of an inquest.

Robert Christopher Adams, 19, was driving his Vauxhall Astra when it ran into the rear of a Volvo lorry at about 1.30am on May 8.

At a brief hearing in Ruthin, John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales East and Central, said that both vehicles were travelling east when the collision occurred at Dwygyfylchi, close to the Penyclip tunnel.

Mr Gittins said Mr Adams was apparently travelling at "considerable speed" and the lorry driver said he was slowing down in the inside lane as they approached the 30mph limit area.

The Astra became stuck under the rear of the lorry.

Pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson gave a provisional cause of death as head injuries, but has sent samples away for toxicology analysis.

Mr Adams, a tyre fitter, of Trem y Ffair, Kinmel Bay, was described by his family as "extremely kind, generous and energetic" and they said he had everything to live for, having recently been promoted at work.

Adjourning the inquest to a date to be fixed, the coroner said: "It will require substantial investigation by the North Wales Police forensic collision investigation unit."

He said he hoped to conclude the inquest before the end of this year.
