AN ONLINE fundraiser page has been created to support Colwyn Bay Cricket Club after it was the target of a suspected arson attack.

Police arrested three youths in connection with the fire, Penrhyn Avenue, Rhos-on-Sea, on May 20 after it took place in the early hours of that morning.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also sent crew members to the scene, while a further two youths were also later arrested.

Matthew Ferdinando, club treasurer, set up the GoFundMe page, writing: “During the early hours of May 20, the 'Tea Pavilion' - the oldest building on the site - was targeted by mindless vandals in an arson attack.

“The damage is extensive and the property will very likely have to be demolished. Luckily, no one was injured and the perpetrators were caught.

“The Tea Pavilion is predominantly used by a number of community groups and charities, who will be without a venue for the time being.

“As a valuable community asset, the club are intent on rebuilding a bigger, better, and more modern facility on the site – if funds, permissions etc. permit.

“Whilst insurance will hopefully go a long way towards our goal, the club will have to contribute funds in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

“We have been inundated with offers of help and support, and so have created this page as a straightforward way of facilitating those generous offers.”

You can visit the GoFundMe page, which so far raised £750 of its £5,000 target, at: www.gofundme.com/f/CBCC-fire.

Following the incident, a Colwyn Bay Cricket Club spokesperson told the Pioneer: "All of the club are stunned by this mindless act of vandalism; it benefits no-one and disadvantages many.

"Not only was this facility used by the cricket club, but it was a wonderful community asset being the meeting point for many local groups of all ages: Conwy Connect, Colwyn Abbey Players and several bridge clubs, to name a few.

"On a positive note, we are not going to be cowed by this. We shall rebuild stronger and better."

A fundraising appeal has also been launched in aid of Conwy Connect for Learning Disabilities.

Organiser Catherine Thornton said :”After a mindless arson attack on Colwyn Bay Cricket Club, Conwy Connect’s Saturday morning art club for learning disabled, ASD (autistm spectrum disorder) children have lost all their equipment in the fire.

“We are asking for donations to cover what we have lost.”

The appeal, which has so far raised £1,810, far surpassing its £500 target, can be found at: www.gofundme.com/f/3azar-childrens-art-club.
