VETERANS of the Falklands War gathered on Llandudno promenade on Tuesday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the end of the conflict.
Organised by the Llandudno branch of the Royal British Legion, they were joined by the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, Henry Fetherstonhaugh, civic leaders and other veterans’ organisations including representatives of the Royal Naval Association, Merchant Navy Association, Royal Air Force Association and Blind Veterans UK.
Peter Kingston, chairman of the Llandudno branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It is so important that we come together to remember those who fought and died during the Falklands War.
“Altogether, 30,000 sailors, marines, soldiers, airmen and merchant mariners took part in the Falklands War.
“255 British personnel lost their lives, seven ships were lost to enemy action, and nine aircraft were shot down.”
Among those in attendance was Andy Roberts, standard bearer for the Llandudno branch of the Royal British Legion.
He was among six Llandudno men who served with the Welsh Guards during the conflict and was injured when the troopship, Sir Galahad, was attacked by Argentine planes as the guardsmen waited to disembark.
