A BOY from Llandudno has been praised for his selflessness after he donated money given to him to buy an ice cream to the hospital which performed two operations on him.

Zac Garland, nine, has suffered from problems with his kidneys, and has had two operations in Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool.

Zac is also one of the youngest members of the Colwyn Bay-based Colwyn Bowmen Archery Club, who took part in Archery GB’s “Start Archery Week” in mid-May.

As it was the event’s 10th birthday, Archery GB offered just as many competitions, with Colwyn Bowmen entering five of them and winning two prizes.

At one such show in Bryn-y-Maen, Zac was rewarded for his hard work by lead coach Nick Kershaw with £5 to buy himself an ice cream.

Instead, Zac, a member of the club since early April, offered the money to Alder Hey, with others having since followed suit.

Nick paid tribute to “the bravest little lad I know” and “a great little sportsman” following Zac’s kind gesture.

Nick said: “He’s had problems for nearly a year, with feeling unwell and being in a lot of pain. He’s been in absolute agony, but has never stopped smiling.

“He’s the bravest little lad I know. He’s had two operations on his kidneys, and has had to go back in to Alder Hey.

“He’d worked so hard at the Bryn-y-Maen show and had been as gold as gold. So, at the end of the day, I said: ‘Here’s a fiver, go and get yourself an ice cream’.

“But he said: ‘Instead of that, could I give the money to the hospital that fixed my kidneys?’

“I texted his mum and his grandma, and they were both in tears about it. They told various people, who gave fivers as well, so in total now, I think it’s got up to about £40.

“He never stops smiling and never gets disappointed. If you’re coaching him, you can really see him trying (to take advice on board). He’s a great little sportsman. Even when he’s tired, he’s still trying.”
