THIS week’s Nostalgia takes a look at the old Clare’s department store on Mostyn Street, Llandudno.

The store was established in 1927, on the premises previously occupied by both Arthurs Pioneer Stores and WS Williams, who also owned The Loyal Store on the opposite side of the street.

The business was founded by Robert Clare Baxter, originally from Runcorn, who rebuilt it as the present Clare’s Modern Store, becoming a ladies’ dressmakers and milliners.

The business became a staple of the community, offering a respectable and fashionable service to the people of Llandudno.

When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann, before being sold to Ulster Stores in 2002.

The store retains the name, and the signage and iconic cage lift remain in place.
