OLD Colwyn-based community arts charity, “TAPE Community Music and Film”, is set to celebrate its first animation festival.

Celebrating diversity and representation in animation, short films and animation projects from both inside and outside of North Wales, “TAPE Animation Festival” will be taking place at the TAPE Community Arts Centre on Berthes Road from August 24-26.

The first-of-its-kind festival will run across these three days, consisting of two main categories; under-16s and over-16s, with tickets and online streaming both free of charge.

Highlights of the event include: Q&As from Marc Silk (the voice of Scooby Doo, Shaggy and Star Wars’ Aks Moe and many more) and Barry Purves who worked as the animator on Postman Pat and The Wind in the Willows.

There will also be a panel discussion focusing on the diversity and representation in animation with Kate Jessop and Isabel Garret, as well as Klaire Hodgson and Megan Gregory of Animated Technologies.

Barry Purves will be screening his new animation film, “No Ordinary Joe”.

There will be lunchtime entertainment - including a performance from the Ghostbuskers - TAPE’s community group band.

There will also be a workshop demonstrating different types of animation in a more inclusive way, including sensory activities, as well as a “Friends of TAPE” screening focusing on animations from professional animators and studios outside of Wales.

Each day will conclude with a feature film – “Encanto”, “Paprika”, and “My Life as a Courgette” - all focusing on the topic of this year's festival – “identity”.

Noah Greenhalgh, animator at TAPE, said: “TAPE has held some fantastic film festivals, and this year we're holding our first film festival centred specifically around animation.

“It's looking to be an amazing event with plenty of incredible guest speakers and screenings from local animators.

“It's important to us at TAPE to celebrate local artists and animators in a way that is inclusive and accessible and to break down the barriers that are common among the festival scene.

“We're super proud of what we've put together, and we can't wait to celebrate the art of animation with everyone.”
