A MAN from Glan Conwy has released his first published work with a new poetry book covering such topics as war, family, grief, Wales.

“My First Little Book of Poems”, by John Spicer, 66, became available to buy on June 21.

For each copy of the book sold, John will also make a donation to Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospice, which is located just outside Conwy.

The book is available to buy either in paperback form (£7.99) or for Kindle users (£3.99).

John said: “I’ve always enjoyed poems; my grandmother used to write them.

“At one time, I was chairman of the community council in Glan Conwy, and each Remembrance Day, I used to write a poem for one of the services.

“I started to write other poems, a couple of funny ones, and quite a few for funeral services.

“(In the book) there are poems on war, family, mourning, and some amusing ones – one is called ‘Natural Gas’, which you can probably guess (its subject)!

“I’ve written about 30 for this book, and since then I’ve written about two or three more.

“The one I’m most proud of is ‘A Letter To Mum’, based during the First World War.

“It’s a young man writing home to his mum, telling her about the conditions, but unfortunately, he’s killed on the battlefield, and the only letter she gets is the government saying he’s died.

“Every pound of my royalties that I earn from the book will be donated to Tŷ Gobaith, which is the favourite charity of mum, who’s still alive at 100.

“There’s a poem in the book about her, as well. I think children’s hospices are a very important thing to support.”
