THE Builth Male Voice Choir left its home of Powys behind last weekend to venture to Llandudno for a couple of charity concerts in the town.

On Saturday (October 14), the choir performed at St John’s Methodist Church, Mostyn Street in support of Hope House / Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices.

The choir shared the stage with Llandudno-born harpist Dylan Cernyw, who has accompanied such Welsh artists as Bryn Terfel, Shân Cothi and Kathryn Jenkins.

His performance wowed all present and earned him a standing ovation.

The present choir has been going for more than 50 years, but there has been a tradition of choral singing in Builth for in excess of 100 years.

In 1888, “Llew Buallt” took a mixed choir of 150 voices from Builth and district to Llandudno and won the choral section of the National Eisteddfod.

These days, the choir led by MD Adrian Morgan, concentrates on concerts, especially for charities, rather than competitive singing.

The choir has been expanding its repertoire with songs such as the classic Welsh hymn “Bryn Myrddin”, through to an arrangement of “You Are The Reason”, which was made famous by Calum Scott who performed in Britain’s Got Talent.

The concert on Sunday (October 15) had free entry, with a retiring collection in aid of Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith who care for babies, children and young people who have life-threatening conditions and are not expected to live beyond 18 years of age.

The charity offers counselling and bereavement support to any family living in Shropshire, Cheshire, Mid and North Wales.
