IT WAS a cool and blustery morning at Conwy parkrun on Saturday (November 5), yet the event still attracted 200 people of mixed ages and abilities for another exciting 5k community event.

Visiting athlete Robin Stacey (York Acorn RC) was the first man home overall with a new PB on his course debut to win his MV30 age cat in just 17 minutes and 23 seconds.

He was followed by North Wales Road Runners Club (NWRRC) member Mark Jessett, who won his MV35 cat in 18.03, with youngster Alfie Shiland (Colwyn Bay AC) third, and once again impressing in 18.23.

The ladies’ race was won by another travelling athlete, Lou Osborn (Ambleside AC), who was 10th overall in 20.35.

But NWRRC duo Kay Hatton and Cheryl Frost took all the plaudits with Kay the second female runner with a great new PB of 22.58, and colleague Cheryl Frost 3rd in 23.11.

Mark Jessett led the North Wales Road Runners home and the club entered 11 seniors and one junior and collected nine podium places including six age category wins.

Steve Mason finished about a minute behind Mark in sixth place overall, but he too won his MV45 age cat in 19.06, with Stuart Culverhouse 13th and third in his MV50 cat in 21.00.

John Dalzell finished 17th overall in 21.32, and Gethin Wyn Jones, despite running with a sore leg still finished strong in 26th place in 22.30.

Kay and Cheryl celebrated their call-up for the North Wales cross-country team at the forthcoming Inter-Counties match by having another great cat and mouse tussle, with Kay claiming a deserved new PB in 28th place overall, and the second lady finisher, but won her FV55 age cat in 22.58.

Cheryl also ran hard, and she was the third female runner, in 30th place overall, and claimed the second spot in the same cat as Kay in 23.11.

Veteran Rob Fryer maintained his form to win his MV65 age cat in 55th place overall in 25.39, with Dave Spofforth and his son Ben running the course together again and shared the same time of 26.47, with Ben also winning his JM10-11 age cat.

John O’Shea finished second in his MV65 cat in 99th place in 27.57, and master vet Don Hale returned from injury with strappings, but opted for a steady recovery trot in 109th place but won his MV70 age cat in 28.48.

Praise was given to the race director and all the volunteers and marshals, in addition to the regular MC and event organiser John Hatton from NWRRC for all their hard work.

Three Road Runners selected for Welsh Inter-Regions cross country at Monmouth

NWRRC now has three athletes selected for the Monmouth cross country championships later this month.

Cheryl Frost will now join team-mates Kay Hatton and Richard Eccles for this Welsh Inter-Region challenge on November 19.

One of the main event organisers, Bernie Jones says he intends to send a very strong squad to these championships, but says he is still waiting to hear from some other runners at other clubs as to whether they are still available after being selected.

He confirmed this week: “Just a polite reminder for those invited to run for North Wales in the Welsh Inter Regions to get in touch with their team managers asap to let them know whether you are running or not.

“We are trying to get full teams out, so we want the chance to give reserves an opportunity.”
