A COLWYN Bay town councillor has apologised for posting a picture of a Norwegian mass murderer in a promotional post on Twitter.

Tom Maclean, a town councillor in Colwyn Bay, posted an image of far-right terrorist Anders Breivik in promoting a deal for supermarket chain Asda.

Mr Maclean, an independent councillor for Colwyn Bay, posted an edited picture of the Norwegian mass murderer holding an advert for an Asda deal.

The photo of Breivik was from his trial for two domestic terror attacks in Norway in 2011, which claimed the lives of 77 people, including members on a Workers' Youth League (AUF) summer camp getaway.

He was found guilty of mass murder, causing a fatal explosion, and terrorism and given a 21-year prison sentence.

The councillor’s post sparked a public backlash, with Mr Maclean facing calls to be sacked.

In a now deleted Facebook post, Maclean issued an apology for posting the image of a “pretty ghastly figure”, adding: “I was highlighting the £1 meal deal for the over 60s which Asda are rolling out which I think is a good idea in these difficult times.

“I believe some other supermarkets may be offering something similar.

"My post included a clip art frame which it was subsequently brought to my attention featured a person I have since been told is a pretty ghastly figure.

“Naturally, once I was made aware of this, I removed the post at once and I apologise for my mistake and any offence caused.

"In life, we live and we learn anew each day. I am very grateful indeed to those who let me know about the clip art.

"Once again I apologise for my error. Have a joyous day one and all."

The post was brought to light by North Wales Life/Mrs Colwyn Bay, a community group who said the Councillor "needs to go".

Their response added: "The comments on the article are all quite clear Tom Maclean needs to step down as a Councillor and from Theatre Colwyn and St Josephs's food bank.

"The blogger claims he did not know who the mass murderer was, but someone so active online and politically would know, this is why no one believes him."
