RESTORATION works on two war memorials in Llandudno and Penrhynside have now been completed.

The work has been carried out by William Taylor Masonry, who are a North Wales based company, experienced in Architectural Stonemasonry, Building, Restoration and Conservation.

Llandudno war memorial is a grade II listed monument designed by Sidney Colwyn Foulkes.

The memorial was completed in 1922 to commemorate people from the area who died in the First World War and was unveiled on December 11. There are 212 names from the First World War on the memorial. The names of the 122 people that died in the Second World War were added later. The name of Llywelyn Evans was added following his death in 2003 during the Iraq war.

Penrhynside memorial is an Obelisk with carved drape and wreath set on capped and footed plinth, showing dedication and names, The main memorial is of a fine-grained limestone (the site overlooks the former limestone quarry at Penrhyn).

The memorial sits high on an escarpment leading to the village.

The memorial itself was unveiled on Wednesday, May 25 1921 at 3pm. by Captain A Taylor. There are 22 names for World War One and one for World War Two.

The work was essential to conserve the memorials for future generations so that they can continue to pay homage to those from Llandudno and Penrhynside who fought and gave their lives for our freedom.

The work was funded by a grant from the war memorials trust with the remaining costs met by Llandudno Town Council.

Cllr David Hawkins, Chairman of the Civic Sub Committee said “The Town Council is delighted that the works were able to be completed ahead of Remembrance Sunday, allowing everyone to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the service of their country.

"The Town Council would like to thank the War Memorials Trust for providing grant funding towards the cost of this project.

"We would also like to thank Mr Rob Chambers of Chambers Conservation Ltd for overseeing the work and for providing technical and expert advice”.
