THE MP for Aberconwy, Robin Millar, has welcomed a Government campaign to boost the take-up of Pension Credit as part of wider support that has been made available.

Pension Credit is a top-up for the most vulnerable pensioners that is worth an average of £3,300.

As well as a cash top-up to the state pension, it opens access to a range of other benefits such as help with housing costs, council tax reduction schemes, heating bills and a free over-75s TV licence.

There are already 1,705 claimants of Pension Credit in Aberconwy, but it is estimated that about 25 per cent of people who could claim the extra help do not currently do so.

Pension Credit can be claimed online, by telephone or by post.

Mr Millar said: “Pension Credit provides a vital income ‘top-up’ for some of our most vulnerable pensioners – worth more than £3,300 on average.

“While I'm delighted over 1,700 pensioners throughout Aberconwy are receiving additional support through Pension Credit, I'm concerned that around 500 more might not be receiving the help they are entitled to.

“It is easy to check if you are eligible and I urge all pensioners to check either online or over the phone. I have also pressed for Welsh language information and access, too.

“If you have loved ones who may be eligible, please do encourage them to check.

“I am also pleased that, from last week, over 11.6million pensioners throughout the UK will start to receive up to £600 to help with their energy bills this winter, as prices are pushed up by Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine.

“This support, worth over £4.5billion, is part of an extensive package helping people of all ages with the cost of heating their homes, including through the £400 Energy Bills Support Scheme and the Energy Price Guarantee, which will save typical households £900 this winter.

“I have created a bi-lingual cost-of-living online hub on my website which contains information about UK Government, Welsh Government and Council support that is available. The hub can be accessed from the homepage of my website.

“As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further help or assistance.”
