CONWY County Borough Council is expected to pay over £2,500 for the hire of an inaccessible disabled toilet situated at Gwydyr car park, Llanrwst.

A Freedom of Information Request obtained by Councillor Mostyn Jones has disclosed that the Council paid up to £171 per week between August 10 and 22 November 22 this year on a disabled loo that could not be accessed.

The ramp to the facility was not completed until mid-November despite the toilet being placed there in August, so for at least 13 weeks Conwy County Borough Council spent around £2,223 on an inaccessible disabled portaloo.

Councillor Jones says the lack of priority given to ensuring that the disabled toilet was accessible ‘raises questions’ of the Council’s use of taxpayer money.

“Conwy Council has made a public commitment to integrate equality considerations into the day to day activities that they carry out as an Authority to enhance the quality of life for the people of Conwy, including the most vulnerable,” said Councillor Jones.

“Despite one of our Ward’s Plaid Cymru Councillors serving on the County Cabinet, here in Llanrwst the County Council has failed to deliver an accessible disabled toilet for a popular park. This is even though they were paying a weekly hire charge.

“All the Local Authority had to do was build a ramp to the door of the portaloo. That was clearly too difficult because it took over three months!

“Not only does this decision raise serious questions about the Local Authority’s commitment to equality and good management, but their use of tax payers money.

“At a time where there is talk of the Independent, Plaid Cymru, and Labour coalition cabinet increasing council tax, it is completely unacceptable that they are wasting our money like this.

“The residents of Llanrwst and Conwy County deserve a better service.”
