AN AWARD-winning pub in Abergele is to welcome back customers next week after closing last month.

The George & Dragon, on Market Street is expected to re-open for business on Monday (February 13).

It had shut its doors on Monday, January 30 after its previous landlord, Lee Murphy, who owned the pub for nearly 11 years, deciding not to renew its contract with brewery Star Pubs & Bars.

But the brewery has since confirmed that The George & Dragon will return, at first under temporary management.

A permanent landlord is still being sought by the company.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said: “We can confirm The George & Dragon, Abergele is re-opening next week under temporary management whilst we recruit a permanent operator.

“Anyone interested in taking it on can contact our website (www.starpubs.co.uk) for more information.”

Lee said financial difficulties at the pub led him to the decision to not renew its contract with Star Pubs & Bars.

In 2019, The George & Dragon was named the best community pub in the Conwy district, and in 2017, won the gold prize for community pub at the Best Bar None awards.
