A ROYAL Navy veteran celebrated his 100th birthday at his favourite cafe. 

Harold Kirkham, a resident at Abbeyfield Llandudno, marked his huge milestone on Tuesday, February 21 at Haven Cafe in Llandudno. 

Harold, who travelled the world with the Navy, was picked up in the morning in a decorated car. Haven had arranged a party for Harold with a singer, cakes and many friends. 

He returned to Abbeyfield for his chosen lunch 'Lob Scouse'. He was accompanied by his friends as well as son Neil and daughter-in-law Pam.

Chrissie Hamer, manager at Abbeyfield Llandudno, said: "Harold stayed awake until 12am on the morning of his birthday and shouted 'I made it'. He is feeling great.

"We held a big Party in the afternoon with a jazz pianist. The mayor of Llandudno [cllr Carol Murabi], Miss Alice, Monkey Man and his wife, councillor Mandy Hawkins and many friends popped in.

"A wonderful afternoon was had. The Penderyn Distillery in Lloyd Street presented him with a big bottle of Whiskey for reaching a 100."

Harold has been at Abbeyfield Llandudno since 2018.

The father to Gillian and Neil, who has a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is an ex-tax inspector. 

Chrissie said: "Harold is charming and is a wonderful happy person.

"He is still very active and goes most days to the Haven cafe every weekday and gets his paper from Londis each day.

"[He enjoys] going to church every Sunday.

"He supports Everton football club and he played rugby for Oldershaw Rugby Club until he turned 40.

"He is a very big family man; he loved family holidays with all the family."

Harold was born in Moreton on the Wirral and moved to Upton.

Chrissie added: "He had a lovely house and garden. He showed his flowers and was famous for his tomatoes. In fact, he supplied them to the village."

Harold received a card for his 100th birthday from King Charles and Camilla, Queen consort.

"A big family party is being held on Saturday which he will enjoy as family is everything to Harold," Chrissie said. 

"Harold is an inspiration to us all and we love him so much at Abbeyfield."
