A WELSH-English filmmaker based in London is to shoot a short film in Llandudno in May.

Jonny Williams, a student at London Film School, is to film the short production as part of his masters course between May 16 and 20.

He has also appealed for donations to help fund the project, which you can find out more about at: www.kickstarter.com/projects/sharksincolwynfilm/sharks-in-colwyn-bay-a-short-film-by-jonny-williams.

The film is entitled “Sharks in Colwyn Bay”, but will be filmed in Llandudno, which Jonny admits is “cheating a little bit!”.

It tells the story of Dick, a middle-aged man with a nostalgic passion for Spain, who finds himself owing a large sum of money to an illegal lender who helped finance his restaurant’s renovation.

Jonny said: “I grew up in London, and am half-Welsh myself, but both the English and Welsh sides of my family are all now in Prestatyn, Llandudno and Rhos-on-Sea.

“I got the idea for this film from visiting them. It’s about a character who has grown up in Wales, but feels detached from his Welsh identity, and feels a sort of cultural alienation.

“For example, my dad is Welsh, and grew up in Wales, but wouldn’t really call himself ‘Welsh’, and that’s what the character in the film is going through as well.

“Hopefully, it will air in about October.”

Jonny, whose parents both went to school in Holywell, has been making films since the age of nine, starting with stop-motion animation before moving to live-action.
