A MUCH-loved dog described as "like a second child" fell down a 25ft well and survived - much to the relief of her family.

Jessica, an 18-year-old Jack Russell, was discovered down a disused well on Graiglwyd Road, Penmaenmawr, this morning (Tuesday, May 30).

Jessica went missing last night (Monday, May 29). Owner Paula Chester launched a frantic search and took to Facebook to ask for help.

Talking to the Pioneer, Paula, who is married to Gordon and has daughter Elisabeth Partington-Chester, said: "We have had a traumatic day.

"She was in our back garden last night about 5pm and I was watching her doing her jobs and she was having a good old rumage around and my husband said something and I turned round. When I turned back, she had disappeared.

"My daughter and I, until about 10pm last night, went up and down the mountain, up the quarry. We shouted her but we couldn't find her.

"There were hundreds of people sharing the Facebook post everywhere, lots of neighbours looking for her. I was just surprised how sympathetic people were and how keen they were for us to find her.

"This morning, at about 5am, our neighbour [Sean] went looking again and I was just going back into the house about 8am and my neighbour came running in and he said 'I've found her.' At the back of our house, at the back of the garden, there is an old well and it is from when houses were built, it used to be an industrial laundry and I think the well is left over from there.

"We tried with our own ladder, which wasn't long enough, so we called the fire brigade. They were amazing.

"At the end of the day it is a dog, our dog, she is like our second child, and yet the fire service put their lives at risks going into this old well.

"There was a young lady called Milly, I think, and she climbed in and got her out."

Jessica has since been checked over by the vets. She is now in recovery and is getting some much deserved fuss from her family. She has been sitting with Gordon for most of the afternoon.

"She got a clean bill of health from the vets," Paula said.

"She is just a bit tired and she will be a bit stiff for a few days.

"She is only little, she is only a tiny Jack Russell. She is 18 and she fell 25ft and she is still here."

When Jessica was found, Paula cried.

"I've never cried so much in my life," Paula said.

"I was crying all night because I was devastated and then I cried when my neighbour Sean said she had been found. Tears of joy.

"For me, my daughter and my husband...well we've had Jessica for 15, 16 years. She is a big part of the family."

Paula expressed her thanks to Sean who she described as "amazing" and his partner Tanya [who looked for Jessica and provided cups of tea] and to all those that helped search for Jessica.

Crews from Llandudno were sent to rescue Jessica just after 7.40am this morning.

North Wales Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook: "Jessica, an 18-year-old Jack Russell, found herself in a spot of bother when she fell 25ft down a disused well last night.
