Seagulls have been blamed for weekend litter at a rubbish-strewn car park at a World Heritage Site.

The Morfa Bach car park in Gyffin, Conwy, is packed with visitors’ cars most weekends as people flock to experience the town’s castle, medieval heritage, and independent shops.

But scavenging seagulls are regularly scattering empty food cartons, chip trays, and rubbish across the 217-space pay-and-display car park.

Whilst the council has installed some seagull-proof bins, the birds often target waste left adjacent to the council’s leased-out ice cream kiosk as well as rubbish left next to over-filled bins.

Mum and nurse Louise Evans commented: “You see the birds regularly pulling the bin bags apart.

“It’s just what seagulls do, but it does make the car park look a mess, and it’s a World Heritage Site with tourists visiting from all over the world.”

A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council commented: “We haven’t received any complaints of litter at this location, but we have reported the concerns to the relevant services.

“There are several large litter bins in the car park for the public to use. These are emptied at least once a day, and the area is litter picked at the same time. This is in addition to the private trade waste arrangements made by the operators of the kiosk.”

She added: “There’s no excuse for littering – we ask everyone to use litter bins or take their rubbish home.”

On its website, the council warns residents and visitors not to feed seagulls as reports are widespread which has led to people suffering injuries, especially during the summer.
