THE PETITION opposing the 20mph speed limit change in Wales is continuing to gather signatures.

As of Sunday, September 17, the majority of residential roads in Wales have changed from 30mph to 20mph.

The Welsh Government says the move will help save lives and also hope that it can encourage people to walk or cycle to work.

But, as with during the trial period in areas like Buckley, the change has been met with strong opposition throughout Wales.

A petition against the change has so far gathered over 438,000 signatures (correct at time of writing).

The petition, started by Mark Baker on September 13, has broken the highest number of signatures for a petition in Wales.

That has smashed the previous record - a petition to allow supermarkets to sell "non-essential" items during lockdown, which reached 67,940 signatures.

The current petition calls on the Welsh government to "rescind and remove the disastrous 20mph law".

The Petitions Committee considers all of those that get more than 10,000 signatures for a debate.

One of those who won't be backing the petition opposing the 20mph speed limit change is Flintshire council leader Ian Roberts.

Cllr Roberts said: "On a personal level, when I voted for Welsh Labour at the last Senedd elections, I knew what was in the manifesto - and this was quite clearly in the manifesto."
