A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER and a talented teenage artist have joined together to produce a series of children’s books which are being sold to support a charity which helps youngsters with disabilities.

Sylvia Harper, of Deganwy, and Ysgol John Bright student, Holly Moran, 15, from Llandudno, have combined their skills to create books which deal with the challenges faced by children with a range of disabilities in an easily absorbed and colourful way.

Sylvia said: “Having noticed bullying and teasing my two great grandchildren have had to put up with over the last few years, I realised it was mostly down to misunderstanding, and after some thought I decided to write a series of children’s books to try and create a better understanding between children with special needs and children who don’t have them.

“I believe it starts with the grown-ups, such as parents, grandparents, and teachers, and therefore each book will be no longer than 26 pages to keep the child’s interest.

"The books have text on the left page and a picture on the right which is perfect for adults to read to a child and create interest by explaining the pictures.

“Children with special needs either physical, or invisible, require increased support against mental and physical abuse such as bullying. I hope that the books can be either read at home or at mainstream and special needs schools.”

Holly said: “This is my first time illustrating a book, and I have loved working with Sylvia and the charity every step of the way. Sylvia and I work particularly well when brainstorming ideas for the page design, and she has always inspired me to add creative flare where I see fit.

"It’s mental to think that my art is behind such a compelling story and will hopefully inspire people to learn more about the challenges others face I’m looking forward to drawing more of Sylvia’s amazing tales in future.”

All profits from the books will go to Happy Faces Children's Charity, a registered charity, based in Rhos- on -Sea, which was started in 2003 by Ray Herbert, with the sole aim of supporting sick, disabled, and disadvantaged children throughout North Wales.

They have provided 18 minibuses to special needs schools across North Wales. They have also helped well over 1,000 children with a wide range of specialised equipment. The 19th minibus is due to be delivered to Ysgol y Gogarth in Llandudno.

Neither Holly or Sylvia are taking any payment for the books and the printers Gwasg Carreg Gwalch in Llanrwst have been helpful with the printing.

A man, who wants to remain anonymous, has sponsored the cost of the first book, and the duo are actively looking for more sponsors for the remaining books to enable more money to go to Happy Faces.

The books can be purchased at the Happy Faces Kiosk on Rhos promenade or by telephoning Ray Herbert on 07968957177.

Sylvia and Holly will be at Clare’s Department store in Llandudno on December 16 to sign books for purchasers.
