THE SUBWAY store in Colwyn Bay closed yesterday (December 14), with members of staff saying they were only told that same morning.

The Subway on Conway Road only informed staff of the closure when they came into work, with staff members telling residents that they were not given a reason for the closure.

The chain had been at the site for several years, sharing a site with a Spar shop at the former Woolworths site.

Having suddenly closed, the news has been met with fierce criticism from residents.

One resident told the Pioneer: “I was just in there buying lunch and asked for an item on the menu.

“The young lady told me they didn't have any more of the ingredients for this particular sandwich and then informed me that the shop was closing.

“Staff had only just been told that morning.”

Another resident said the move was “callous”, while many expressed their sympathy for staff members, who have now been left jobless.

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar said the closure was “particularly concerning” for the town after the Boots and Poundland in the town also announced closures.

He said: “I was given no advance notice of this closure.

“It is particularly concerning following news about other stores in the town in recent weeks and the way in which it has been communicated to staff is appalling, especially in the run up to Christmas.

“I have written to Subway to ask them to explain and re-consider their decision.”

The Pioneer approached Subway for comment.
