THREE months of roadwork misery has started to allow a new cycle and pedestrian route to be created.

The works will take place on Marl Lane and A470 from January 8 until March 30.

Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) are constructing 'new links' for the cycle and pedestrian route along Marl Lane, the A470 and Narrow Lane.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: "We’ve received Welsh Government funding to improve the route for pedestrians and cyclists on Marl Lane running alongside the A470 and linking to Narrow Lane.

"We will be constructing new links for the cycle and pedestrian route along Marl Lane, the A470 and Narrow Lane. These will link to the Nant Y Glyn area and create two new toucan crossing points over the A470. The work will also include new street lighting.

"The work will be carried out between January 8 and March 2024 30. There’ll be temporary traffic lights along Marl Lane and the A470 at times, while we carry out the work."

Proposed work includes:

  • Widened pavements and shared use paths
  • A controlled shared use crossing on the A470 near Marl Lane roundabout
  • New shared use path along A470 connecting into Nant y Glyn
  • New controlled shared use crossing on the A470 near Narrow Lane roundabout
  • New controlled shared use crossing on Pentywyn Road
  • Extra crossing places for pedestrians along the route

Conwy Council said, as part of their consultation on the scheme: "By upgrading and creating new walking and cycling routes we aim to make active travel the normal way to get around for local journeys.

"This cuts down unnecessary traffic and helps families get about safely and sustainably."

Readers took to the Pioneer Facebook to voice the views on the plans.

Rob Williams said: "A toucan crossing over the main road into Llandudno... absolutely mental. Why not block in an underpass? Save time and money."

Sarah Lander-Nee Jones said: "Part of the changes are for crossings so that people using the roads off the A470 can cross safely.

Alan Davies said: "Great planning when there is roadworks by the Tesco roundabout starting in January too. Both major roads in and out of Llandudno will have roadworks yet again."

The scheme will complete missing sections that were not included in last year’s 'active travel' improvement work.
