Conwy County Borough councillors are asking residents for feedback on the recently introduced 20mph speed limit on residential roads and whether it should be switched back to 30mph.

Wales became one of the first countries in the world, and the first nation in the UK, to lower the default national speed limit on residential roads from 30mph to 20mph in on September 17, 2023.

The Welsh Government said the change in speed limit was introduced to reduce collisions, save lives and reduce injuries.

But the move has been met with backlash from residents, with more than 460,000 people signing a petition in opposition to the new speed limit.

While several 20mph speed signs across Wales have also been defaced in protest.

Conwy councillor asking whether 20mph speed limit should be changed back to 30mph

In the latest development a Conwy County councillor has asked residents how they feel about the new 20mph speed limit and if there are any roads they think should be changed back to 30mph.

Conwy county councillor for Glyn-y-Marl Ward Mike Priestly, on X (formerly Twitter), posted: "20mph in Conwy. If a Conwy resident feels that the speed limit on a particular road should be changed from 20mph to 30mph, or from 30mph to 20mph, they can email us at traffic@conwy.gov.uk."

Member of the Welsh Parliament for/Aelod Senedd Cymru Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, was among those to reply to the post adding she knew of "many who have emailed in".

Another person responding to the post commented: "The computer is going to crash Mike (with five laughing emojis)."

This comes after representatives from North Wales councils, Transport for Wales, Arriva and the Welsh Government 20mph taskforce met recently to discuss the controversial new speed limit recently.

During the meeting, councillors explained they have received positive feedback to lower speeds in residential areas but there was frustration with the change on some main roads.

It was also discussed that there had been a disparity in the number of roads already changed back to 30mph between councils.
