THE dazzling version of The Wizard of Oz showing at Llandundo's Venue Cymru this week is a true multi-media experience.

Bringing elements of cinema and even video games into the theatre makes for a highly entertaining journey along the Yellow Brick Road.

The production pays homage to the 1939 film, there are even Easter Eggs featuring the movies stars Judy Garland, Margaret Hamilton and Ray Bolger, but the Oz presented here is a real dystopia, with equal parts of kitsch and menace.

Aviva Tulley delivers goosebumps with her first rendition of the anthemic Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

From then, we follow the story most of us are very familiar with. But few will have seen it done better.

The ensemble are amazing, switching between Munchkins, Emerald Citizens and Flying Monkeys at a high-octane pace.

Avina Tulley is flawless as Dorothy, ably aided by her companions, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.

Gary Wilmot gives an assured performance as the charismatic Professor Marvel and the Wizard of Oz, but perhaps isn't on stage as much as you'd like him to be.

And Toto, brought to life on stage by a human performer, almost steals the show.

Almost.

However, for me, the true star of the production is The Vivienne as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Back on home turf in North Wales, the drag star delivers a witch on heels to remember.

The Vivienne wears her influences on her immaculately tailored sleeve, a little panto, a little Lily Savage, a little Norma Desmond, a heap of troubled Hollywood divas like Bette Davies and Joan Crawford, but the result is a beautiful monster all of her own.

With friends and family in the audience, it was a tour de force performance, that shows how far The Vivienne has come as an artist since winning RuPaul's Drag Race UK.

The new musical, based on the iconic story by L. Frank Baum, is touring the UK and Ireland throughout 2024, following a celebrated run at the world-famous London Palladium.

It is playing at Venue Cymru in Llandudno from March 5 to 10.
