AN IMPORTANT chair which was generously gifted back to Conwy has been given a sympathetic restoration.

The  Jackdaw Chair, described as a remarkable artefact, is located in the Guildhall located on Rose Hill Street.

The large wooden chair proudly showcases the town crest alongside a representation of two jackdaws.

A spokesperson for the town council said: "A Jackdaw refers to a person born within Conwy's walls, named after the birds nesting in the medieval ramparts. Due to more hospital births occurring outside the town, the membership has declined to just a handful of individuals."

The chair was sympathetically restored by Alex Webster, from the French Polishing Emporium.

The spokesperson said: "He was welcomed back by the mayor of Conwy, Cllr Evie Roberts, and Conwy Towns Council’s very own Jackdaw, cllr Joan Vaughan.

"According to local lore, this chair once resided in the Castle Hotel where it held a peculiar tradition - anyone who sat in it was obliged to buy a round of drinks. The chair's journey beyond the hotel remains shrouded in mystery, however, it resurfaced at an auction in the south of England.

"Acquired by the Jackdaw Society, the chair was generously gifted back to the town, finding its rightful place in the Guildhall for all to admire."
