A WOMAN from Llanfairfechan raised hundreds of pounds by having her head shaved in aid of a cancer charity last weekend.

Fran Holmes, 38, took part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s “Brave the Shave” challenge on Saturday (April 6) at Paragon Barbers, on Station Road.

This challenge encourages people to raise money for the charity by having their head shaved.

She said she was inspired to take this challenge on after the loss of a friend of hers due to cancer.

Fran said: “It went very well, and I raised £430 for the charity. I had lots of people staying well done to me.

“I wanted to do this in memory of my friend who passed away from cancer, and I know a lot of people who have suffered from cancer, as well.”

Her fundraising total meant Fran more than quadrupled her initial target of £100 for Macmillan.

The charity strives to help anyone with cancer to live life as fully as they can by providing them with physical, financial and emotional support.

More than three million people are living with cancer in the UK, a figure which is expected to rise to four million by 2030.

Fran, who has autism, added: “I want other people with learning disabilities to know that they can do something like this, too.

“I just want to spread the word, because I don’t think many people with learning disabilities like me have done something like this.”
