MORE than 1,000 people gathered in Llandudno on Sunday to pay their respects during a moving Remembrance service at the town’s war memorial.
At 11am, the promenade fell silent as the sound of waves and seabirds mixed with the solemn hush of reflection. A cannon fired from the Great Orme marked the start of the two-minute silence before Canon Philip Barratt led the service.
Speaking about the symbolic poppy, Mr Barratt described it as “a small sign of beauty coming in the midst of absolute devastation.”
He added: “Our poppies remind us of the hope and the freedom that was won, and the immense cost and sacrifice at which that freedom came.”
The Last Post was played, followed by the laying of wreaths at the Llandudno War Memorial. The hymn “Abide with Me” was performed before the service concluded with the singing of the Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Anthony Bertola; mayoress, cllr Carol Marubbi; councillors; members of the armed forces; cadet forces; ex-service personnel, and voluntary organisations.
Earlier in the morning, a parade made its way from Holy Trinity Church to the cenotaph on the promenade following a Divine Service, conducted by The Revd Vince Morris.
The parade featured the Llandudno Town Band, Standard Bearers, the Mayoral Party, civic dignitaries, and representatives from a wide range of organisations including the Royal British Legion, RAF Valley, 203 (Welsh) Field Hospital, the Royal Naval Association, the Merchant Naval Association, Army and Royal Air Force associations, Sea and Army Cadets, North Wales Police, HM Coastguard, the Fire Service, RNLI, St John Ambulance, Scouts and Guides, and members of the Royal Voluntary Service, among others.
