A CARE home for the elderly in Craig-y-Don has received high praise from inspectors for its “excellent person-centred care” and a wide variety of planned and "spontaneous" activities.
Moorcroft Residential Care Home, located on Fferm Bach Road and registered for 24 residents, was visited by Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) in January, with the subsequent report highlighting excellence across key areas.
The home received an ‘Excellent’ rating for Wellbeing and Care and Support, while Environment and Leadership and Management were rated as ‘Good’.
The Responsible Individual (RI) and the manager were commended for fostering a positive culture within the home. The home was praised for its focus on promoting people’s independence, supporting them to remain physically and mentally active, and ensuring they have choice and control over their daily lives.
Inspectors said: “People are supported to exercise maximum choice and control, with staff providing care in the least restrictive way and always acting in each person’s best interests.
“People receive excellent person-centred care and support from staff who know them well and interact with them in a dignified, respectful and compassionate manner.

“People are included in day-to-day decisions and are involved in activities that are meaningful to them. Personal plans are detailed and clearly outline each person’s care and support needs and preferences, enabling staff to provide consistent and informed support.
“The environment is clean, well maintained and provides a welcoming atmosphere. The home is friendly and homely and supports a sense of comfort and belonging.
“There is continuous significant investment in the property, contributing to a safe, pleasant and well-presented environment for people living there.”
The Responsible Individual and management team were also praised for providing clear leadership and communicating a strong vision and ethos for how care should be delivered.
During their visit, inspectors observed “genuine warmth in interactions” between staff and people living at the home.
Inspectors were also pleased to note the wide variety of planned and spontaneous activities offered, tailored to individuals based on their needs, preferences and abilities.
Inspectors said: “We observed that attention is given to ensuring everyone has opportunities to participate in activities that matter to them.
“People can enjoy outings in the home’s own minibus; they look forward to takeaways from the fish and chip shop, and there is an upcoming movie night with popcorn and ice cream.”
Inspectors said the home had given “careful thought” when selecting suitable soothing décor, which had a “warm and calming effect.”
They noted: “There is a communal lounge, and the large conservatory has a variety of seating options available for people to relax and enjoy views of the garden.
“Several new reclining chairs have been purchased.
“The dining room is very well presented for people to use; tables are laid out nicely with tablecloths, condiments and napkins.
“There is evidence of a refurbishment programme in place.”
