Fans of Thomas the Tank Engine can now step into the real-life world that inspired the beloved stories.
A behind-the-scenes railway tour through Wales offers an immersive experience into the childhood favourite.
The Talyllyn Railway has launched 'A Day on Awdry's Railway Experience,' a full-day guided tour exploring the heritage railway that inspired the Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s Railway Series and the fictional Skarloey Railway on the Island of Sodor.
Luke Ryan, Media Creator and 'Awdry Expert', said: "The Reverend's writings about the Skarloey Railway have brought thousands of visitors to the Talyllyn Railway from all across the world over the years, we're so excited to introduce this experience for the dedicated fan that wants to see it all."
Designed for groups of up to four, the pre-booked experience is led by Talyllyn Railway experts with a deep knowledge of Awdry’s life, work, and special connection to the railway.
Guests will travel first class and visit locations, locomotives, and scenery that inspired the stories, characters, and settings that have delighted readers for more than 80 years.
The tour includes exclusive access to the railway’s engineering workshops and locomotive sheds, as well as the opportunity to view original artefacts connected to the Reverend Awdry – items not usually on display to the public.
Participants will also receive a commemorative gift, enjoy lunch at King's Café at Tywyn Wharf, and be treated to traditional afternoon tea at Quarryman's Caban in Abergynolwyn.
The Talyllyn Railway holds a unique place in both railway preservation and literary history.
The Reverend Awdry was a devoted volunteer and lifelong supporter of the railway, drawing extensively on its engines, people, and atmosphere for his much-loved books.
Many of the narrow-gauge locomotives that inspired his tales still operate today, allowing fans to experience the sights and sounds that gave life to the Skarloey Railway.
'A Day on Awdry's Railway Experience' is available year-round by prior arrangement and must be booked at least four weeks in advance.
The Talyllyn Railway is the world’s first preserved railway.
